The Trickle - Down E ect : Web Caching andServer

چکیده
Web proxies and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) are widely used to accelerate Web content delivery and to conserve Internet bandwidth. These caching agents are highly eeective for static content, which is an important component of all Web-based services. This paper explores the eeect of ubiquitous Web caching on the request patterns seen by other components of an end-to-end content delivery architecture, including Web server clusters and interior caches. In particular, object popularity distributions in the Web tend to be Zipf-like, but caches disproportionately absorb requests for the most popular objects, changing the reference properties of the ltered request stream in fundamental ways. We call this the trickle-down eeect. This paper uses trace-driven simulation and synthetic traf-c patterns to illustrate the trickle-down eeect and to investigate its impact on other components of a content delivery architecture, focusing on the implications for request distribution strategies in server clusters.

متن کاملUsability of ECT for Quantitative and Qualitative Characterization of Trickle-Bed Flow Dynamics Experiencing Filtration Conditions
This work investigates the pros and cons of using the Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) for imaging and quantitative characterization of flow dynamics in a four-phase trickle-bed reactor. ECT use is increasing in non-invasive imaging thanks to its low cost and convenience compared to nuclear ionizing, non-ionizing and other tomography methods. Yet, ECT has low spatial resolution, lack of ...
متن کاملCost-Aware WWW Proxy Caching Algorithms
Web caches can not only reduce network tra c and downloading latency, but can also a ect the distribution of web tra c over the network through costaware caching. This paper introduces GreedyDualSize, which incorporates locality with cost and size concerns in a simple and non-parameterized fashion for high performance. Trace-driven simulations show that with the appropriate cost de nition, Gree...
